War and peace are caught up together in an endless cycle. Benjamin Franklin recognised this in 1744 when he wrote a short poem for “A Pocket Almanack”:
“War begets poverty, poverty peace; Peace makes riches flow. Riches produce pride, pride is war’s ground; War begets poverty and so the world goes ’round.”
