These photos, taken by Dave Cleaveland from MaineImaging.com, show the destroyer’s arrival at the mouth of the Kennebec River near Portland.
The ship departed for builder’s trials from Bath Iron Works shipyard in Bath, Maine, located just up the Kennebec, on Monday. The Navy said that during the trials many of the ship’s key systems and technologies would be demonstrated. The Navy-Industry team was also to conduct numerous operational demonstrations in preparation for acceptance trials in April.
DDG 1000 is the lead ship of the Zumwalt-class destroyers, a class of next-generation multi-mission surface combatants tailored for land attack and littoral dominance.
